We’re delighted to partner with Metrograph for a limited engagement run of Daisuke Miyazaki’s Plastic (2023) as part of their Japanese Soundtrack of Youth series. This marks our 2nd collaboration with Daisuke Miyazaki, following our home video release of his existential horror film Videophobia (2019) — and you’ll soon be able to add Plastic and more of Miyazaki’s headstrong indie filmmaking to your video collection.
Daisuke Miyazaki’s tender, colourful, terribly charming tribute to headstrong youthful romance and the transcendent power of pop is inspired (and soundtracked) by musician Kensuke Ide’s eclectic, electrifying 2020 concept album—a record framed as being the work of a fictional ’70s glam rock group, Exne Kedy and the Poltergeists, and their mysterious frontman. In Plastic, rock obsessives Jun and Ibuki (Takuma Fujie and An Ogawa) bond over their mutual love for the reclusive Kedy’s music, falling in love while trying to track their idol down, only to drift apart during the Covid-19 pandemic… until the surprise announcement of a Poltergeists reunion presents them with the possibility of a fresh start.
Director Daisuke Miyazaki & composer and bandleader Ide Kensuke will be present in New York City for an introduction and Q&A on Oct. 4 & 6 at Metrograph.
In addition to the run at Metrograph, Lumiere in Los Angeles is planning a nearly exhaustive retrospective of Miyazaki’s work, starting this weekend! Some of these are part of our catalog, yet a few are still undistributed in the United States… so make a point of heading out if you’re in the area. Miyazaki’s is a remarkably coherent body-of-work, addressing the specific, youthful alienation of living in a globalized Japan.
